In today’s unpredictable world, workplace violence is sadly more common than ever before. Whether your employees are in the office, on the road, or attending events, knowing how to spot danger before it strikes is a critical skill that can save lives. At C.O.B.R.A. Self-Defense South Africa, we specialize in corporate self-defense training, empowering teams to stay safe and make smart, life-saving decisions. One of the most important things we teach in our programs is how to recognize the early warning signs of violence. There are 14 easy ways to spot a violent attack before it happens. Here’s what your employees need to know:

1. Shifty Eye Contact

If someone is looking around nervously, making poor eye contact, or their eyes dart between exits, they might be planning something dangerous.

2. Invasion of Personal Space

An aggressor might intentionally move closer to create intimidation or prepare for an attack.

3. Hidden Hands

If someone keeps their hands out of sight — in pockets, under clothing, or behind objects — it could indicate they’re concealing a weapon.

4. Target Glancing

Potential attackers often check their target repeatedly, making sure they can approach without obstacles.

5. Sudden Changes in Behavior

Watch for people who become agitated, withdrawn, or display rapid mood swings. Drastic behavior changes are serious red flags.

6. Clothing That Doesn’t Fit the Situation

Heavy jackets in warm weather or oddly bulky clothing could be used to hide weapons.

7. Positioning for Advantage

Attackers often maneuver to control exits, block pathways, or isolate victims.

8. ‘Grooming’ Gestures

Repeatedly touching their face, neck, or clothing could be signs of nervousness or mental preparation for an attack.

9. Aggressive Posture

Chest out, chin up, fists clenched — all signals that someone is physically and mentally preparing for confrontation.

10. Ignoring Boundaries

If someone keeps advancing despite clear signs they are unwelcome, it’s a major warning.

11. Obvious Signs of Anger or Distress

Visible rage, clenched jaws, flared nostrils, or shouting may indicate imminent violence.

12. Carrying Objects Strangely

If someone is awkwardly carrying a bag, backpack, or box, they could be concealing dangerous items.

13. Witnessing Other People’s Reactions

Sometimes, others nearby will notice suspicious behavior even if you haven’t yet. If you see others looking alarmed, pay attention.

14. Verbal Threats

Take any verbal threat seriously, no matter how casual it sounds.
