For many people jogging with earphones is the perfect escape. The rhythm of the music pushes you forward and helps you switch off from the stress of the day. But that same soundtrack that motivates you can also make you blind and deaf to danger. Attackers know this and they use it to their advantage.

Why headphones make you vulnerable

When you jog with music blasting in your ears you lose one of your most important survival tools. Your hearing alerts you to footsteps behind you, cars slowing down, dogs barking or even someone calling out a warning. With headphones on you cut off that early warning system. By the time you realise something is wrong it is already too late.

How attackers use sound cover

Predators are not stupid. They choose targets who make their job easier. A person jogging with earphones is perfect because they cannot hear someone approaching from behind. The sound of the music hides the noise of quick footsteps or a car door opening. Even if the attacker drops something or makes a mistake the victim will not notice because the music covers it up.

Real risk in familiar places

Many people believe that running in their own neighbourhood or a busy park is safe. But crime often happens where people feel most relaxed. Attackers know runners are predictable. They know the routes, the times and the fact that many of them are distracted by their playlists.

Practical ways to stay safer

  • Jog without headphones, or if you must, keep the volume very low in one ear only.
  • Vary your route and time. Do not become predictable.
  • Stay alert to what is happening around you. Look behind you now and then.
  • Run with a partner or in a group if possible.

Awareness is stronger than your playlist

Music can keep you going but it can also keep you from surviving. Criminals rely on surprise and distraction to get close. Do not give them that chance. The safest runners are the ones who are aware, not the ones with the best soundtrack.Being fit is good. Being safe is better. Next time you go for a jog ask yourself a simple question. Do I want to enjoy my music now or do I want to make sure I get home to enjoy it later.
