We all know that road rage is a real problem — and in South Africa, it’s not just about shouting or rude gestures anymore. It can quickly turn into violence. As someone responsible for employee wellbeing and safety, road rage is a risk you cannot afford to ignore. Many employees spend time commuting or traveling for work, putting them at higher risk for these kinds of unpredictable, senseless crimes. At COBRA™ Defense South Africa, we teach practical, real-world skills to stay safe — and that includes how to deal with road rage situations smartly and calmly. Here’s what every employee needs to know:
If someone cuts you off, tailgates, or drives aggressively, do not react. No hooting, rude gestures, shouting, or trying to “teach them a lesson.”
Example: If a driver swerves into your lane, stay calm and let it go. Your pride isn’t worth your safety.
If another driver is aggressive or trying to intimidate you, your goal is to put distance between you and them. Don’t pull over. Don't stop to argue.
Example: If someone follows you closely, change lanes or take an earlier exit — somewhere public and safe.
Your car is your first shield. Lock your doors and keep your windows up. Do not get out to confront someone or to apologize.
Example: If another driver blocks your way, stay in your car, keep your engine running, and call for help if needed.
If you feel unsafe, drive to a busy place like a shopping centre, or police station. Avoid stopping in isolated areas.
Example: If someone is trying to provoke you, turn toward the nearest public area, even if it’s not on your planned route.
If something feels wrong, it probably is. Act early rather than waiting for the situation to get worse.
Example: If a driver starts shouting at you at a red robot, don’t argue. Drive away carefully as soon as it’s safe.
👉 Employees who feel safe are happier, more focused, and less likely to suffer trauma that leads to absenteeism or stress leave.
