When people think about self defense they often imagine a violent attack where they must fight back or run for their lives. The truth is that the most important part of staying safe happens long before the fight or flight stage. It happens in the tiny choices you make every day. I call these micro decisions. These are the small things you do without much thought. They are often invisible to others but they can make the difference between being targeted or being left alone.
Think about standing in a queue at the ATM. Most people step right up to the machine without looking around. A simple micro decision would be to quickly scan who is near you and choose to stand with your back against the wall or in a position where you can see anyone approaching. It takes two seconds but it removes the chance of being surprised.
When walking along a road many people do not consider which side gives them a better view of what is happening. A smart micro decision is to walk facing the oncoming traffic. This allows you to see if a car slows down or pulls up next to you. If you walk with your back to the cars you will never notice until it is too late.
Closing a door behind you is another simple micro decision. Whether you are entering your home or getting into a lift, a closed door buys you time and removes easy access. Many criminals depend on the fact that people leave gates or doors open while carrying groceries or chatting on the phone. A closed door is not rude. It is smart.
When you sit down in a restaurant or a meeting room, think about where you place yourself. Can you see the main entrance? Do you know where the exits are? You do not need to look paranoid. You just quietly choose a spot that gives you options. That small decision could be the one that helps you act quickly if trouble starts.
Micro decisions are about being one step ahead without looking scared or over the top. Criminals often choose people who appear distracted or unaware. By making these small adjustments you send a clear message that you are alert. Most of the time that is enough to make a criminal move on to someone else.
You do not need to live in fear. You also do not need to be a fighter to protect yourself. Start by paying attention to the tiny everyday choices. Where you stand. Which way you walk. When you close a door. These micro decisions add up and they can save your life.
