Most people think of self defence as fighting skills. But in real life, you are usually surrounded by furniture. A desk, a chair, a table, or a counter can all help you protect yourself and escape if someone becomes aggressive.
Criminals want control and surprise. When you put something solid between you and them, you take that control away. Furniture gives you distance, time, and choices.
When you walk into a room, take a few seconds to notice:
This habit keeps you calm and ready if something feels wrong.
Desks and chairs:
If someone makes you uneasy at work, keep the desk between you and them. If they move closer, push the chair forward and step back toward the door.
Tables in restaurants:
Sit where you can see the entrance. If someone dodgy walks in, move your chair back slightly so the table is between you and them. If you need to leave, pick up your bag and go — do not argue.
Counters and reception areas:
Stay on the staff side when you can. A counter creates distance. If someone becomes aggressive, step toward an exit instead of past them.
At home:
Use doors, furniture, and walls to make layers between you and danger. A sofa, table, or even a bed can slow someone down while you move to safety or call for help.
Good self defence is not only about punches or kicks. It is about smart thinking and using what is around you. Furniture is part of your environment. Learn to use it, and you are already safer than most people.
